Citizenship and Culture of Legality

The objective of the Citizenship and Culture of Legality program is to promote the development of a participatory citizenry from an early age. This secondary school-based program trains students to be accountable for their decisions and encourages analytical thinking as well as rational, conscious choices. As in all of our school-based programs, after being directly trained by IMIFAP personnel, teachers replicate the program with their students during class. We have developed interactive Civics and Ethics textbooks for each grade level and a training program for teachers. The content includes civic life participation, democracy, values, substance abuse prevention, and other topics. IMIFAP’s Civics and Ethics curriculum is now mandatory in Mexican public secondary schools, and more than 11.5 million students have used our textbook since 1999.

The Citizenship and Culture of Legality program also includes a series of complementary programs that work in the community at-large, addressing similar concerns with parents, health professionals, and other community members. This project reinforces and balances the school-based initiative, prioritizing good citizenship in the entire community.
