Parenting

IMIFAP’s parenting program helps mothers and fathers better understand and value the role they play in their children’s lives. Many parents are unaware of the profound effect of their parenting on their children. This program focuses on a wide variety of topics, including: self-awareness, childrearing styles, rule-setting, communication, values, respecting individuality, gender roles, self-esteem, building affection and trust, decision-making, child development, sexuality, discipline, and life skills. Parents who have participated report better communication with their children, demonstrating changes in attitude towards discipline, decision-making within the family, and encouragement of their children’s independence.

Recently, IMIFAP has developed a program for caregivers that focuses specifically on the difficulties of raising children in families where one or both parents have migrated. This common situation in some regions of Mexico leaves a distinct mark on children. The program trains teachers and caregivers on how to address these children’s specific problems, also providing in-school workshops for the children themselves. After this program, children are better able to discuss emotional issues linked to the absence of parents, improving their motivation, emotional communication, and general emotional condition.
